A watch for civil time and the solar day. Iphone Display.
a
WHAT YOU HAVE
A functioning civil-time and apparent-solar-time watch, implemented with a scalable vector dial and locally calculated astronomy. The hands, solar-noon window, date, equation-of-time pointer, digital readouts, sunrise/sunset, and Sun-bearing marker are calculated from one selected instant and location.
PHONE HOME SCREEN
On iPhone/iPad: open the hosted watch in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. Enable Open as Web App if offered.
On Android: open it in Chrome, then use Install app or Add to Home screen from the browser menu. A direct installation prompt appears only when the browser offers one.
Installation and Home Screen options vary by browser and operating system.
USE LIKE A WATCH
– Watch view hides the controls and emphasizes the dial and digital readouts. Use Exit watch view or Escape to return.
– Keep screen awake requests your browser’s screen wake lock. It works only on supported devices while visible and may be released by power management.
– Show/hide the seconds hand and choose 12-hour or 24-hour civil readouts. The solar-noon window always uses 24-hour time to avoid ambiguity.
– Print readings opens the browser print dialog for a snapshot of the dial and calculated values.
– This is not a phone lock-screen replacement and does not guarantee background operation.
READING THE DIAL
Silver hour/minute hands: civil time.
Thin pale seconds hand: device-clock seconds, optionally hidden.
Gold Sun hand: apparent solar time, one revolution per 24 solar hours. Noon is 12 at the top; midnight is 00 at the bottom.
Date window: civil date for the selected time zone.
Solar-noon window: calculated local meridian crossing, shown in civil time and rounded to the nearest minute.
Equation-of-time gauge: apparent minus mean solar time, with a -20 to +20 minute range.
Orange bezel marker: calculated solar azimuth, relative to the manually selected top-of-phone bearing. It dims when the Sun is below the geometric horizon.
The bezel is a diagram/manual direction reference, not a sensor-driven compass. Default 0 degrees means north-up. It does not automatically align with the real world as you turn your phone.

Watches that display both civil time (mean solar time) and true solar time use a rare horological feature known as the Equation of Time.
How It Works
- Civil Time (Mean Solar Time): The standard 24-hour clock time we use every day, based on an averaged length of a solar day.
- True Solar Time: The actual position of the sun in the sky (as shown by a sundial), which can run up to 16 minutes fast or 14 minutes slow compared to civil time due to Earth’s elliptical orbit and axial tilt.
- The Complication: An Equation of Time watch displays this difference either via a dedicated sub-dial/scale (showing + or – minutes) or by utilizing a secondary sun-tipped minute hand that trails or leads the standard civil minute hand.
Notable Examples in Haute Horlogerie
Because these movements require a specialized internal kidney-shaped (parabolic) cam to track the sun’s irregular path, they belong to the highest tier of mechanical watchmaking:
- Audemars Piguet (Jules Audemars Equation of Time)
- Breguet (Marine Equation Marchante)
- Panerai (Luminor 1950 Equation of Time)
- Vacheron Constantin (Les Cabinotiers / Celestia)

Mechanical luxury watches that track both civil time and the solar day represent the absolute peak of astronomical watchmaking.
They fall into two design categories: Equation Marchante (where a dedicated, continuous “running” hand tracks the sun’s time directly alongside the civil minute hand) and Standard Equation of Time (which uses a scale or sub-dial to show you how many minutes to add or subtract).
The premier options available from top horological houses include:
Breguet Marine Tourbillon Équation Marchante 5887
$253,400.00
swisswatchesforsale.com
- Type: Équation Marchante (Running Equation)
- Price: Retail is approximately $275,000 to $300,000 USD.
- Details: This is the gold standard for tracking solar days. Instead of forcing you to do the math, the Breguet Marine Équation Marchante features a secondary minute hand with a carved, gilded sun at its tip. It sweeps continuously across the dial, instantly showing you true solar time alongside the civil time hand. It also pairs this complication with a tourbillon and a perpetual calendar.
Panerai Luminor Équation of Time (PAM00670)
$25,900.00
Panerai United States - Type: Linear Indicator scale
- Price: Retails around $25,900 USD.
- Details: A more rugged and modern take on an ancient complication. The Panerai Luminor PAM00670 utilizes a linear indicator on the dial right above the 6 o’clock position. The cursor moves horizontally between -15 and +15 minutes, allowing you to manually calculate the solar day relative to standard civil time. It boasts an impressive 8-day power reserve.
Audemars Piguet Jules Audemars Équation of Time
$65,850.00
Diamond Source NYC - Type: Sub-dial display & Solar Culmination
- Price: Generally commands around $62,000 to $66,000 USD on the pre-owned market.
- Details: A legendary astronomical wristwatch. The Jules Audemars Equation of Time goes a step further by showing true solar noon (solar culmination) tailored specifically to a city chosen by the owner. It displays the difference via a dedicated counter arm and features a complete perpetual calendar with moon phases.
Would you like to explore how these Equation Marchante gears are physically engineered, or do you want to narrow down your options based on a specific case material like platinum or rose gold?
