Time To Buy A Self Winding Automatic Mechanical Pocket Watch

Captain Convey Comment

I have been getting into watches a lot lately. Its interesting.

I did make a post on George Washington’s Pocket watch and really got
more interested in pocket watches. So much so I started to check
where I could purchase one at a reasonable cost.

I found several that were interesting.

$48.00 and free delivery.

I have never considered owning a pocket watch until now.

The most important reason was in the product description.

Manual Winding Movement
Must be fully wound manually every day.

Automatic Mechanical Movement

When the person wearing the watch moves, the ROTOR pocket watch rotates to provide an automatic winding function.

Mechanical watch refers to a watch that uses the mainspring to store power.

A hand-wound watch must be wound by a man’s hand rotating the crown and pushing the winding device to tighten the clockwork.

The automatic watch drives the automatic plate to oscillate back and forth through the natural swing of the wrist to automatically tighten the clockwork.

If its a pocket watch that you wear in a pocket or in a vest the natural swing would come from a person moving their body not just the wrist.

The text below was also included in the description of the pocket watch.

PS:

Office workers and elderly people lack exercise and cannot provide enough power for pocket watches.

It is recommended to manually wind the clockwork 10 times before going to bed every night to maintain time accuracy.

At first I thought it said ps:office workers – ment postal service workers.

That would be correct for sure. 🙂

What actually hit me between the eyes was, “elderly people lack excercise and cannot provide enough power for pocket watches.”

I have read it takes about 8 hours of body movement with a automatic
wrist watch to keep it “wound up”.

I am not sure what that would translate into for the above pocket watch.

So how much movement or exercise will equal the winding of the
pocket watch 10 times to keep it accurate?

If it takes about 8 hours for a wrist watch I think it would be close to
the same for a pocket watch, maybe more.

If you move you arm enough with a wrist watch it will stay accurate.

Since you don’t wear your pocket watch on your wrist, just moving
your wrist won’t do anything to wind your pocket watch.

My plan is to walk a mile each day to start off with.

For me thats about 2400 steps.

Steps, stride, will vary from person to person.

If not I will increase to 1 1/4 mile = 3,000 steps.

Next if necessary i will increase to 1 1/2 miles = 3,600 steps

The 2 miles = 4,800 steps.

If that ain’t enough to wind this pocket watch it should be.

To initiall know how many steps I need to walk each day I
installed Steps on my iPhone.

The main point here is I need the exercise.

Winding the watch by walking is a good excuse.

I will be wound up and so will the pocket watch, so to speak. 🙂

“Office workers and elderly people lack exercise and cannot provide enough power for pocket watches.”

The best feature of buying a pocket watch was in the small print.
It prompted me to prove them wrong.

I decided to get a different pocket watch that costs less and was
a better pocket watch.
