When George Washington wanted a new watch in 1788, he wrote to his fellow Founding Father Gouverneur Morris, asking him to buy one for him in Paris. Morris, who would become U.S. minister to France three years later, was making a business trip there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Washington asked for a simple, gold watch of good quality, similar to the big, slender one that Thomas Jefferson had gotten for James Madison. He sent Morris 25 guineas, saying he would pay more if necessary (according to the book Jean-Antoine L\u00e9pine, Horloger<\/em> by Adolphe Chapiro).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Three months later, Morris wrote Washington from Paris that Jefferson had warned him against the maker of Madison\u2019s watch, claiming he was a crook. Jefferson instead recommended that Morris go to another watchmaker, named Romilly. Sadly, Romilly turned out to be a bad apple, too, Morris explained to Washington. Morris then asked a merchant for yet another recommendation and was given the name of a watchmaker named Gregson. He was no better than the first two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Finally, Morris sound success when he visited Jean-Antoine L\u00e9pine<\/strong>, watchmaker to King Louis XVI and one of the greatest watchmakers to ever live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He bought two identical watches from L\u00e9pine, one for Washington and one for himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They were large, simple, key-wound watches with virgule escapements. Washington\u2019s was numbered 5,378 and remained in his family\u2019s possession until 1935. The movement lacks the typical two plate construction and represents the final step towards the development of the hanging barrel \u2018L\u00e9pine movements\u2019. The spring barrel features a later \u2019circular feather\u2019 spring. Gold, engine turned, consular case with enameling and \u2018pearl like\u2019 inserts. Gilt brass cuvette engraved with three \u2018fleur de lys\u2019, instructions for setting the time and for winding the watch, signed \u2018Lepine H(orlo)ger du Roy\u2019, numbered 5490, and an \u2018M\u2019, which meaning is unknown. Rare and very fine, open work, gold \u2018Fleur de Lys\u2019 and \u2018arrow tip\u2019 hands only used between 1782 and 1788. \u2018Enameled copper dial signed \u2018L\u00e9pine Invenit et Fecit\u2019. The \u2018A,R\u2019 readable on the balance bridge foot, as in the latest versions after 1780. The watch does not have any visible marks identifying its maker, but it does have the symbol of the canton of Neuch\u00e2tel, Switzerland. Following features are seen in these movements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n There are some features permitting to discern earlier from later versions of the L\u00e9pine caliber. One feature is the shape of the spring retaining the main spring axis (from left to right): the oldest and rarest version (a) is horseshoe shaped ad rather large, used before 1775. The second version (b) is of feather shape, used between 1775 and 1780. The last and most common type (c) is small and of circular shape, used from 1780. The last version can come with different shapes of indentations. Later versions are made of two wheels of different shapes with triangular or multiple triangular edges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ________________________________________________________________________<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jean Antoine I L\u00e9pine (Clockmaker)<\/p>\n\n\n\n https:\/\/www.lapendulerie.com\/en\/artists\/jean-antoine-i-lepine\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n Signing his works \u201cLepine Hger du Roi\/A Paris\u201d, Jean-Antoine<\/strong> I L\u00e9pine was one of the most important Parisian clockmakers of the second part of the 18th century. L\u00e9pine initially worked as an \u201couvrier libre\u201d, then became a master on March 13, 1762, and taking over the stock of his colleague Caron, who held the title of Horloger du Roi et du Garde-Meuble de la Couronne. Having settled in the rue Saint-Denis in 1756, the place Dauphine in 1772, the rue des Foss\u00e9s Saint-Germain-l\u2019Auxerrois in 1777, and then the rue des Vieux-Augustins during the Revolutionary period, L\u00e9pine led one of the most productive and renowned workshops of the reign of Louis XVI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n During the Revolution, an inventory was drawn up of the clocks that belonged to the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne and the royal family; it contained no fewer than thirty-two clocks by L\u00e9pine.
